Feedback of Rough Cut

We have gained feedback from the rough cut, as we felt at an appropriate point in our editing to ask our peers for their opinion of our video. Most people said that the editing fitted the song's pace well, however we did spend too long on some things like the facebook bullying part, and that the camera could be shaky at times. We do also still have some gaps in the video, which obviously needs sorting. This advice has really helped and we are now sure of the direction we are going with the music video, and has also spurred us on to working harder over to next few weeks!

Ancillary Task Progress

Whilst me and Jack have been busy editing, Charlotte and Alysha have been working hard on the two ancillary tasks. They have made great progress, and everyone in the group is really happy with the progress we are making on all three tasks.

Here is the main picture which Alysha has used to begin making the magazine advertisement

She then edited it amazingly to produce a picture which conveys everything else as dark, but still captures the life and vitality of the red rose:

Then, she filled in the background and added other layers, including texts and some faded in pictures to create the advertisement.

Here is the progression she has made to create the advertisement:

Here is the rough advertisement.

Whilst we are all really happy with the magazine advert and its progression, however obviously we will welcome any feedback and should we have any more ideas, both as a group or if Alysha has an idea on her own, we may edit it from this.

The digipak creation is also progressing and here is the girls' work so far:

Here's the front and back of the digipak so far. Obviously, there are still two panels of the digipak to do, but we are pleased with the progress we have made by now.

The creation of the back of the digipak went like this:

Editing Again!

We are still in the process of editing our music video - a long and time consuming task which can get very frustrating! We have fortunately managed to overcome a few problems in final cut, so now we can use transitions, colour effects etcetera.

After filming everything, we have reached a conclusion that some things are not good enough to be used in the final cut, therefore we must do some re-filming. We plan to do this this sunday, the 23rd of January.

As we also have two ancillary tasks, we are working on different areas of the project.
Me and Jack are working on the main task, editing the video.
Alysha is working on the magazine article, which is one of the ancillary tasks
Charlotte is working on the second ancillary task, the digi pak.

We formed these roles after careful consideration to each of our skills and preferences of what to work with. Alysha and Charlotte were specifically interested in working in photoshop, therefore they said that they would like to do the ancillary tasks.

Of course, we are still working as a group, asking the other members for their opinions to our work and opening any improvement suggestions or constructive criticism.

Re Filming!

After editing a large chunk of our video and finding that we are dissatisfied with what we have done, we decided that we do needed to do some re filming. On Sunday 16th January we met at Charlotte's to re film the happy scenes, the laying down scenes, the fight scene, the scene where I throw the phone and lastly, the scene which we had just thought of, a screaming scene.

All in all, the day went successfully and we were really happy with our new footage. The footage where I am screaming and in distressed worked really well and these are perfect for use in the video. The fighting scene was much better this time, as we managed to stop laughing and to film properly! The happy scene went really well and we thought of some new ideas.

The only thing is the problematic laying down scene, it is now the fourth time we have filmed it and it is still giving us grief! The problem is, we felt that we needed a white sheet to be in the shot, to give a real impression of a coffin - like setting. However, it is so hard to get the sheet so it has no creases and it is almost impossible to align it up right! We have tried filming it without the sheet, just on the floor. We are going to see how this scene looks in black and white to see if it will look ok on the floor.

Argument Scene

Our argument scene was the main scene which needed some serious looking at. For one, we definitely needed to improve our serious acting faces, and also the use of the tripod made the scene seem too steady and placid. We wanted a really erratic, chaotic and violent scene.

While watching the video for love the way you lie by Eminem and Rihanna (which I do almost on a daily basis), I noticed the camerawork of the argument scene. It was really clever and the camera sort of follows Megan Fox as she and Dominic Monaghan argue. The joltiness of the camera mirrors the turbulence of the relationship. The cameraman also uses sweeping pans and tilts which view their spatial relationship and keep an eye on the action.

Charlotte has identified some key comparisions between this video and our video. You can see these here

Editing Screenshots

Here are a few screenshots from editing:

More Filming

This weekend, we have filmed a lot more of our music video.

Many scenes needed to be re-filmed, including the one of me lying on the table; as we simply couldn't get it to work from such a height. Therefore, we came up with the idea of me lying on a sheet on the ground, this was a lot better as the others could film over me and there was a much better range of angles avaliable to fully capture the scene.

With a fresh supply of roses, we also filmed me picking the rose petals off one by one, and then tearing them up in a rage.

The monday before, we had filmed the graveyard scene, with Jack walking into a graveyard looking distraught, and Alysha and Charlotte as mourners by the gravestone.

While looking at the footage from the last couple of weeks, we have decided that we do need to re film the argument scene, the pill scene and the sofa scene. While we still have footage to play around with, and can always edit the video and use the old footage to slot in temporarily, we plan to re film these scenes this week.

Beginning to Edit

With most of our filming done, we are beginning to edit the video using final cut.
With some beginner problems out of the way, such as how to actually get the video onto the computer, we have been able to understand final cut so we can edit it with ease.

Here is a screenshot of the software we are using, along with a shot which we are quite keen to use in the video. Obviously we are at the beginning of the editing stage and have not done much yet. However, in the next week or two we are all planning to put in lots of time to edit the video so it is exactly how we want it.
